Derivative of a pickup truck or 4-wheel-drive vehicle, but with fully-enclosed passenger cabin interior and carlike levels of interior equipment.
Although the designs vary, SUVs have historically been the midsize passenger with a body-on-frame chassis similar to that found on light trucks.
Most SUVs are designed with an engine compartment, passenger and cargo compartment combined, and no dedicated trunk like a truck body. Most medium-sized and full-size SUVs have three rows of seats with a cargo area directly behind the last row of seats.
SUVs are known for high ground clearance, upright, square body, and high H-point. This can make it prone to roll over due to its high center of gravity. SUVs bodies have become more streamlined, but the size and weight remains poor fuel economy.
